Grigg sets dual goal!

The 24-year-old’s goal at the weekend not only saw off Coventry – in front of the watching Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill – it sent Latics four points clear of Burton at the top of League One.

It also saw Grigg reach the 20-goal mark in the league for the third year in a row, and move to within two of Swindon’s Nicky Ajose in the goalscoring charts.

With five games to go, Grigg is hoping a strong finish can help both him and Latics reach their targets, and round off an already-memorable campaign on a high.

“I’m not going to lie, I’ve had a little look at it, and I know I’m two behind,” Grigg told the Evening Post. “We’ve got five games left to go, and I’ll be doing my best.

“I just want to score as many goals as possible to help the team.”

Despite being hampered in the first half of the campaign by injuries and international commitments, Grigg has become the first Latics player since Nathan Ellington in 2004/5 to reach the 20-goal mark in the league.

“Twenty has always been the one – that was what the chairman said he signed me for, and that’s why I signed, to get 20 goals and get promoted,” Grigg recognised.

“Obviously the aim is to get as many goals as possible, but 20 was a nice target.

“But it means nothing if we don’t get promoted.”

It was another great weekend for Grigg and his colleagues, who got back into the dressing room to discover Burton and Walsall had lost – and Ajose had failed to add to his 22 goals.

“The boys always check the scores, it’s natural at this stage of the season,” revealed Grigg.

“We had a little look, but we knew by the cheers on the pitch when they were announcing them.

“If we do our job, though, it doesn’t matter.”

Latics are now 10 points clear of third-placed Bradford, who have hit a winning streak since losing at the DW last month, but Grigg says no-one at the DW is counting any chickens just yet.

“We’re in a great position, it’s in our hands, and that’s always what you want, so at the moment we want to be champions,” he added.

“If we keep playing how we are playing, we will be. We’ve just got to make sure we don’t get carried away.

“The boys have proved that we aren’t doing that, we keep going.

“We’re in a great position, it was another good performance against Coventry, but there’s a long way to go.”
