Wigan Warriors rising prop Sam Eseh has joined Castleford Tigers on a two-week loan deal, having recently made a successful return to the field.

Eseh, who signed with Wigan from Wakefield ahead of 2024 on a two-year deal, featured for the opening 30 minutes in the club’s recent reserves win over Castleford at Robin Park, having suffered a hamstring injury during a pre-season game against Huddersfield.

“It was really good to get some minutes. It’s been a long 10 weeks of rehab and running, so it’s good to play rugby again,” said Eseh.

“It was a Grade 3c hamstring tear and it was unlucky, but the staff have been amazing with me and have looked after me really well.

“I’m feeling really strong coming back now.

“I spent most of my time in the gym with Sam Walters and Ethan Havard.

“It’s been a grind, but it’s been really good to dig in with those boys.

“We’d have some longer days in the gym, a bit longer doing different sessions or longer running sessions. But that group has embraced it and worked hard to get back.”

He has since linked up with Castleford Tigers, and could make his debut against London Broncos having been named in Craig Lingard’s squad.

On the short-term loan move, Warriors head coach Matt Peet commented: “Sam has recovered from his injury really well.

"He played 30 minutes for our reserves and now needs game time at the highest possible level.

“Castleford will provide the perfect opportunity for him and we are looking forward to seeing him perform for them.”

Eseh made his Super League debut just last season with Wakefield, going on to make 15 appearances for Trinity in the competition.

He was also named the Championship young player of the year in 2022 following loan spells with Featherstone Rovers and Barrow Raiders.

Castleford's director of rugby Danny Wilson added: “We needed to add some presence to our pack, especially with all the injuries and suspensions.

"Sam is a great fit and comes from a good club who will certainly add quality to our team.

"When we knew he was available we acted quickly. I would like to thank Wigan for their assistance.”
