Close call for Colts
Didsbury 17 Tyldesley 20
Tyldesley travelled with only 14 and came so, so close to defeat at Didsbury after going behind with just thirteen players on the pitch and four minutes remaining, in a game that never really got going until the second half.
The first half was continually stop, start as both teams failed to get a foot hold, although it wasn’t through lack of effort. A superb pack effort from Weaver, Mennell, Ashmead, Prendergast Taylor, Monks and whittle dominated the majority of the scrums. Whilst Unsworth and Guest ran hard and straight, due to a good supply from Ball, who was excellent at scrum half as was Lloyd at fly half.
Finally the deadlock was broken on the half hour as Mennell supported some great forward play allowing him to go over in the corner for an unconverted try. Half time 5-0
Bongs started the second half well. A brilliant break from Prendergast, continued with Guest who off loaded to Unsworth with Lloyd going wide and touch down for another good but unconverted try in the thirty eighth minute,10-0. Didsbury came back well and crossed for a converted try seven minutes later, then added a penalty in the fifty fifth minute to draw level. Despite good defending from Donegan, Ashmead, Weaver, Moluasi and Jackson
From this point the game opened up. Tyldesley went back in front, as strong runs from Guest and Unsworth, supported by well Lloyd, who broke free, drawing the cover, then, fed Whittle, who crossed the line putting them five points ahead in the sixtieth minute. As in the first half Tyldesley received another yellow, with just nine minutes remaining, giving the opposition a two man advantage, who capitalized on it five minutes later, crossing for another seven pointer putting them two in front, and with it the game or so most thought.
From the restart Bongs bravely pressed hard via Ashmead, Weaver, Prendergast, Taylor and Monks, resulting in a Tyldesley scrum, with Ball shipping the ball out for Lloyd, who took on and beat the defence then pass to Donegan, with just the line in front, who touched down in the corner and restore the lead, and the game.
