TRANMERE Rovers have emerged as the front-runners to sign Leigh RMI's classy winger Steve Jones.
RMI manager Steve Waywell has revealed that he has been contacted by Rovers' manager Dave Watson enquiring about Jones.
Steve said: "Dave Watson phoned on Monday and he was going to get his chairman to phone ours up. Hopefully it will get moving.
"I think Steve wants to stay local and it is good club - traditionally they want to play football and that would suit Steve. It would be a good move if he goes."
Once Jones' future is resolved, Steve will then know what budget he will be working with and will be able to start planning for next season.
"The quicker he goes the better even though I don't want him to go," said Steve, "He's got his heart set on playing in the Football League."
Meanwhile Steve has signed Hyde United left-back Paul Robertson, who was a free agent.
Steve said: "He is a very good player who I've been after for a while now. He is a bit like Mick Wallace - good on the ball, got a good left peg on him and gets up and down. He will fit the way we play."
A lot of players will be out of contract at the end of the month so Steve expects the club to become more active in the transfer market.
He said: "I need to rotate my squad which means a squad of 19 players that are good enough for the conference which is something I didn't have last year."
