Ridings off into the sunset...

LEIGH RMI legend Dave Ridings will not be playing for the club next season.

The 34-year-old midfielder has rejected a 12-month contract offer from the Railwaymen after the club failed to match his wages from last season.

But Leigh manager Steve Waywell said that he could not allow sentiment to get in the way when negotiating with the fans' favourite.

Waywell said: "Dave Ridings has been brilliant for the club. But he is 34 now and we have had the best out of him. I know there is better players out there who I can get for less money."

Dave German is also unlikely to be playing for Leigh next season but Waywell says he would have liked to re-sign both players.

"They are popular with the fans," said Waywell, "That's why I wanted them both to re-sign. They have been a big part of this club's success."

Waywell thought that he had already lost Ridings a couple of weeks ago when he looked as though he would sign for Stalybridge.

Last week Ridings had a change of heart and said that he wanted to continue to play for Leigh.

But this latest twist will not be a big problem for Waywell who has planned for next season without the two Daves.

He said: "I have got the players I wanted signed up. Other players have said that they will re-sign. I will sign two or three more in pre-season."
