A Wigan mum has launched a campaign to give a children’s ward new books to read over the festive period.

Sarah Rice is a representative for children’s publisher Usborne Books and runs online group Sarah’s Story Shop. She has been promoting reading to young people since November 2018.

The mum of two, from Orrell, recently paid a visit to the Rainbow Ward at Wigan Infirmary with her son Dillon, and was amazed by how welcoming an environment the nurses had made for the poorly children.

It was a moment that inspired her to launch a fund-raiser to give the unfortunate youngsters a little more enjoyment over the Christmas period.

“This Christmas I wanted to use my book business to raise money to donate lots of beautiful Usborne Books to a worthy cause, and I couldn’t think of none more worthy than the children’s Rainbow Ward at Wigan Hospital,” said Sarah.

“I recently had to visit the ward with my son Dillon after he decided to drink olbas oil, but that’s a whole other story! Whilst there I saw how they work so hard to make it a happy experience for the children and I wanted to give something back.

“I noticed their reading library was looking a little bare and thought I can help them to revamp this with the help of the local community.

“I have been in touch with the ward who are delighted to hear about the idea, up to 15 children could be spending Christmas on the ward and alongside the books for the library I would love to gift each child with a little book too.”

Every penny from the fund-raiser will be used to purchase books for the Rainbow Ward, with Sarah even putting her usual commission fee towards the campaign.

Sarah added: “I hope you’ve never had to experience a trip to hospital as a child or with your children, but if you have you’ll know it truly is an amazing ward and I can’t wait to help make that experience a little bit better. Donation will help to put a smile on the faces of children going through tough times this Christmas.”
