A TEENAGE boy is in hospital with a serious head injury after a collision between a car and a motorbike in Atherton.

Two people were hospitalised after emergency services were called to the junction of Hamilton Street and Leigh Road shortly after 12 noon on Monday afternoon following reports of a collision between a silver Citroen and a red Honda motorcycle.

Paramedics, who were on the scene within minutes of the first call, found a 16-year-old boy, who was riding pillion on the bike, unconscious having suffered a serious head injury. He was rushed to the specialist head unit at Hope Hospital in Salford.

A 40-year-old man who is believed to be the rider of the motorcycle was also hospitalised. Ambulance crews put him on a spinal board before taking him to the Royal Bolton Infirmary with a fractured finger, facial injuries and an injury to his right leg.

The driver of the car escaped without injury.

Police officers closed several roads in the area and put diversions in place while evidence was gathered and the vehicles removed from the scene. Hamilton Street was shut at the junction with Tyldesley Road and Leigh Road at the junction with Market Street, with the closures expected to last until Monday evening.

Greater Manchester Police said there were thought to be no suspicious circumstances.
