Trekking to top of world for Dad
Christine Fletcher at the top of the mountain
AN ASTLEY woman has conquered Africa’s highest peak and raised nearly £4,000 for the Alzheimer’s Society in memory of her father.
Christine Fletcher, 51, was joined by her daughter Caroline Gomez when she climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania last week after training and fundraising for months.
The pair have already raised thousands for the charity by completing a gruelling trek across the Egyptian desert from Mount Sinai to the Red Sea in 2009. They decided to raise money after the death of Christine’s father, Emile Bertrand, who died in June 2009 after suffering from the disease for seven years.
Christine, of The Straits, said: “It has been hard, extremely hard. Worst than I had imagined, and I had to push my limits, both mentally and physically a lot further than I thought I could.
“But it has been an exceptional adventure with fantastic people that I am already missing. I thank everyone again for their support.”
