Shirley and Kieran Lloyd have set themselves a weight-loss task and will take part in the London Marathon

A COUPLE who lost 10st between them are dedicated to staying trim by running the London Marathon.

Shirley and Kieran Lloyd, of Burns Avenue, Leigh, had battled the bulge for years but after joining Wigan Council’s Lose Weight Feel Great programme they’re fighting fit now – and training for the 26 mile event on April 13 in aid of Wigan and Leigh Hospice.

Shirley, 40, a checkout operator, who weighed 16st 3lb is now a healthy 11st 4lb, and is looking forward to the marathon. She said: “I was feeling my size 20 trousers getting tighter and tighter – that finally persuaded me to do something about my weight. I have a very sweet tooth. As a mum of four, I think I got used to eating for two. I never lost the weight I gained during pregnancy. I had good intentions but I would put the diet off until a friend recommended Wigan Council’s Lose Weight Feel Great. I started going to the Community Weight Management programme, which combines physical activity sessions with weight loss classes. I go to weekly aerobic sessions and afterwards a Slimming World group.

“To my amazement, I’ve discovered I like running and last year I signed up for the Wigan 10k Run for Wigan and Leigh Hospice and Kieran ran it for Christie Hospital. The Hospice then let us know that there were two spots for the London Marathon. Kieran wanted to prove himself and show he can stick to his goals. We have both been affected by cancer. My grandad, Ernie Goldthorpe, died 27 years ago, from mouth cancer and he went to the hospice.”

Kieran, a 33-year-old IT specialist, was 21st 9lb before he joined Lose Weight Feel Great and is now 16st 9lb. He said: “I was overweight, lethargic and couldn’t climb a staircase without getting out of breath. Then Shirley started on the weight loss programme and was seeing some great results. It took a lot of persuasion but I did eventually agree to go along with Shirley. Since then I haven’t looked back.

“My problem was I used to eat fatty foods at work. I was eating from service stations and fast food restaurants all the time. For dinner I would eat pies, pasties, sausage barms or burgers. I started going to weekly exercise and advice sessions on how to makes changes to my diet and lifestyle. I have more energy now and I feel great physically and know that I look much better than I did. I started changing my lifestyle and diet. I began making salads for work and I’d do a walk first thing in the morning. I built that up to a jog. I wished I’d done it years ago. I kept saying I would lose weight soon but never did. If you put the effort in, you get the rewards.”
