POLICE are investigating the death of a man in Leigh.

Officers were called to a house on Moresby Close, at around 1.50am on Tuesday August 26 following reports of an assault.

During the disturbance, a 62-year-old man from a neighbouring property had been injured.

The man was taken to hospital for treatment to his injuries, but died on Saturday August 30.

A Home Office post-mortem examination will take place today (Sunday) to determine the exact cause of the man’s death.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of section 18 assault and bailed pending further inquiries.

Police are now appealing to anyone who may have information to come forward.

Detective Superintendent Joanne Rawlinson said: “First and foremost I would like to extend my condolences to this man’s family at what is clearly a very traumatic and difficult time for them.

“Our investigation is focused on establishing exactly what happened on Moresby Close during the early hours of Tuesday morning, and exactly how this man came to sustain what are now fatal injuries.

“I do not want to speculate on what happened and that is why it is so important we speak to anyone who was present at the house during this incident and witnessed what went on.

“If you were at the house, or nearby, if you have overheard something or have any information whatsoever, please come forward.”

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 0161 856 4342 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
