New car park will boost town centre
A LITTLE-USED multi-storey car park blighting Leigh town centre is to be demolished.
The town centre management group, have announcedd plans to regenerate Bengal Street car park to fulfil promises for safer and more accessible parking in the town.
The multi story car park will close at the end of the monthon Saturday, April 28, to make way for a modern and attractive surface car park. And council chiefs hope that the improved lighting, fencing and landscaping will attract more drivers.
Work is due to start at the end of the month, and should be completed within 12 weeks.
The new car park will serve both the Turnpike Centre and the Town Hall.
The council’s head of infrastructure, Mark Tilley, said: “Leigh is undergoing an excellent renaissance with investment from major retailers, the new cinema and restaurants as well as work in recent years at the Sports Village and Bickershaw Marina.
“Using funding from developers, we have already replaced the unsightly old railway arches with a smart surfaced parking area and it is funding from developers that will see the new Bengal Street facility in the town centre.”
Alternative pay and display car parks in the area will be available throughout the regeneration, including: Doctors Nook, Church Street, Lord Street and Spinning Gate. These sites have also recently been upgraded, with cash and card payments available.
The main part of the work is set to be completed by the Queen’s Jubilee Beacon Concert, on June 4.
The concert takes place on the adjoining Civic Square, where organisers promises a patriotic evening with entertainment including a firework display and performances from local schools and dance groups.
