MP: Time for a tax rethink

A LOCAL MP has urged the chancellor to rethink tax plans which she says will hit thousands of hard-working residents.

Bolton West MP Julie Hilling has criticised claims made by Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne that changes to the benefits system to be introduced in April are necessary to crack down on the benefits culture that rewards skivers and shirkers.

However, Ms Hilling has revealed that hard working families in her constituency, which includes parts of Leigh and Atherton, are among those being hit hardest. Some 60 per cent of the people affected by the government’s changes to tax credits and benefits are actually in work, while statistics also suggest working families with one person earning a wage could lose out by as much as £534 per year.

Atherton-based Ms Hilling stated: “The people that are losing out here aren’t skivers; they’re strivers. It’s hard-working people, trying to do the right thing.”
