Leigh Remembrance Service at the Cenotaph

MOVING tributes were paid to the borough’s fallen servicemen and women at Remembrance Sunday services.

Wigan’s deputy Mayor, Coun Billy Rotherham, led a parade in Leigh, from the Marsh Gymnasium in Ullswater Street, to the war memorial in Church Street Gardens.

Coun Rotherham also laid a wreath on behalf of Wigan Council.

Remembrance Sunday parades and memorial services were also held in Abram, Ashton, Aspull, Atherton, Golborne, Hindley, Ince, Lowton, Platt Bridge, Shevington, Standish and Tyldesley.

The haunting strains of The Last Post filled the corridors and classrooms of Leigh’s Bedford High School on Friday as students and staff paid a poignant tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

The poignant notes heralded the start of two minutes’ silence during which students and staff lowered their heads in quiet reflection.

Bedford Head of Music James Emberley brought added gravitas to the occasion by sounding out the call. Opting for the full, deeper tones of the euphonium over the traditional bugle, Mr Emberley played at three locations across the school, flanked by some of Bedford’s Young Enterprise Leaders, before they gathered at the school’s historic War Memorial for a final clarion call.
