Mill fire danger

YOUTHS set fire to an abandoned mill in Wigan.

Crews were called to Dan Lane Mill, in Leigh Street, Atherton, at 7.30pm on Sunday, after youths had broken into the mill and set fire to a large pile of rubbish and mattresses on the ground floor.

Six firefighters, using breathing apparatus, were at the scene for three hours, using jets to extinguish the flames.

Russ Condon, watch manager, said: “There was damage to the rubbish left there. It looks as though the youths had piled it up in one room. It is dangerous to go into a disused building as floors could collapse.”

Police were also called to the scene.
