LEYTHERS did the town proud in the New Year’s honours list.

Announced last weekend, Heather Frederiksen is to receive an MBE for her services to swimming.

The 27-year-old picked up three silvers and a gold at this years Paralympic games.

She has enjoyed a remarkable year, and also won a gold, two silvers and a bronze at the games in Beijing in 2008.

And a Royal Naval Reserve Officer originally from Leigh, has also been recognised.

Lieutenant Commander Brian Meadows (pictured below), 59 a Media Operations Officer currently serving in the Navy Command Headquarters in Portsmouth, is to receive an MBE in recognition of his outstanding performance throughout his service in both the Royal Navy and Royal Navy Reserve.

Brian, who now lives in Barry, South Wales, with his wife Vicky and daughter Tamsin has given almost 45 years of distinguished service in naval uniform which has led to this recognition from the Queen.

On receiving news of his award Brian said: “I was quite overwhelmed when I was informed, the Navy has been my life, it has made me the person I am today and I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to serve for so long.”

Brian joined the Royal Navy from Bedford High School in 1968 as a boy signalman and has served in a variety of ships and shore establishments all over the world.

A very keen sportsman he switched career paths to become a Physical Training Instructor (PTI) and was subsequently selected for a Commission and Officer Training.

This time last year Brian was serving with the United States Second Marine Expeditionary Force in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.

He has also completed operational tours in Northern Ireland, Iraq and Bahrain.

Also honoured was Wigan and Leigh College technical advisor Stephen Christie from Abram.

He is to receive a British Empire medal for services to further education.

Stephen was also one of the leading lights of the now defunct Hospital Radio Metro at Leigh Infirmary.
