Lisa’s dream job to help animals

Lisa Burnett

A LEIGH woman is the new RSPCA manager of the borough.

Lisa Burnett, who has a range of ideas to raise the profile of the branch and get a better deal for all creatures great and small, has always wanted to work with and for animals.

She knows that pet lovers always have to face the inevitable, which is why she gives her 19-year-old rescue cat bags of affection, and says: “The problem is they die too young.”

Lisa took up her duties just before Christmas, following the retirement of Bill Stubbs, and she’s keen he, with his vast experience, should still lend a hand.

She’s been in business advice and development for over 20 years, and her work has included charities, one involved with the mentally ill.

“But I always wanted to work with animals” said Lisa. “When the RSPCA job came up, I wasn’t particularly looking for a change of job, but it was a charity I always wanted to be involved in.

“I’ve had pets all my life, and the job of Wigan RSPCA manager fits me like a glove. My greatest intention is to raise the branch profile. I firmly believe there some confusion in the public perception about the RSPCA and exactly just what it does.

“I am determined to get over the message that the charity at local level is different from the charity at national level, and want to get over the message that the money raised locally goes to help local animals.

“And I want locals to realise that if they want to leave their money to the Wigan RSPCA they must specifically state ‘for Wigan RSPCA’ in their will, otherwise it goes to the national organisation. Our two worlds, whilst intimately involved with animals, are totally different.”

Lisa, with officials and members, has set herself the task of introducing the work of the RSPCA – which covers a host of animal-related subjects, and she believes the social media is great for spreading the words to many hundreds of supporters at the touch of a button.

She also has advanced plans to persuade local businesses and schools to choose the local RSPCA as their charity of choice.
