Latest weapon in flood fight
IT may look like something designed to search the skies for signs of extra-terrestrial life or the set of the latest Hollywood blockbuster, but instead it is what the area’s latest flood defence will look like.
This gigantic storm tank, big enough to hold a six-storey apartment block, will form part of the proposed £20m scheme to ensure long-suffering residents in Tyldesley no longer have to put up with the ordeal of sewer flooding.
The huge storage tank – 25 metres across and 23 metres deep – is being built at the East Lancashire pumping station at Coldalhurst Lane in Astley as part of expansion of the site planned by United Utilities.
New, larger sewers will also be laid in the North Lane and Merton Grove areas of Tyldesley as part of the two-year project.
Matt Steer, United Utilities project manager, said: “This is engineering on a huge scale, but we’ll make sure we keep local people updated as our plans progress.”
Work has already started on the new access road to the pumping station site at Manchester Road, opposite Holyrood Nursery. The project should be completed in May 2014.
The sewer enlargement work is expected to begin in the North Lane area next summer, and in the Merton Grove area later next year. Residents will have the chance to view the plans and discuss any concerns they have with United Utilities, although the dates for consultation are yet to be confirmed.
The investment forms part of United Utilities’ £3.6 billion programme between 2010 and 2015 to improve water and waste water systems across the North West.
