Knifeman beaten back by fearless store customer

A BRAVE customer thwarted a knife-wielding would-be robber during a store raid in Wigan.

The offender threatened the 59-year-old store owner with a blade and demanded cash at the Landgate Mini Market, Ashton.

But the daylight robbery was prevented when a customer of the Yewdale Road shop entered and disturbed the offender.

The man, who was described as a regular at the store, is believed to have struck the robber with his hand, causing him to flee.

Police are now appealing for witnesses after the offender - described as white, between 30 and 40 years old, and wearing a dark hooded top - ran off empty handed in the direction of the nearby Landgate School on Landgate Lane.

The terrified store owner, who was in the shop by herself, was not injured but left shaken as the would-be robber posed as a customer before producing the knife from inside his sleeve.

Det Con Andrew Hill, of Wigan CID, said: “The offender has casually entered the store before walking up to the shopkeeper and threatening her at knife-point.

“While she was not injured, she has been left extremely shaken and I would urge anyone with information about the offender or who saw a man matching the description running off to call us.”

Anyone with information regarding the incident, which occurred sometime between 12 and 12.15pm on 9 February, is asked to call Wigan police on 0161 856 7226, or Crimestoppers, anonymously on 0800 555 111.
