Cheaper greener future
RESIDENTS in Golborne are reaping the benefits of a green energy project which has transformed their houses and saved them hundreds of pounds in energy bills.
The Green Deal - which is a Government-backed scheme - allows residents to make their homes more energy-efficient and off-set the cost against savings made from energy bills.
The scheme provides loans, with no up front costs, to help residents save money on fuel bills by subsidising improvements in insulation, draught-proofing, double-glazing, boilers/heating systems and renewable energy technologies such as solar panels.
One resident, Wendy Aspinall of Knowsley Avenue, has seen her energy bills half since signing up to the deal.
Wendy, who lives with her five children, had her home “made green” just before Christmas last year.
She said: “The difference has been incredible. The house not only looks fantastic the difference was instantly noticeable.
“I have the thermostat about 10 degrees lower and the heating is on far less than it used to be. It has pretty much halved my weekly energy bill and people who come to the house have all said how warm it always is - it is a far nicer place to be.
“The work they did was fantastic and my home is lovely. I’d recommend it to anybody.”

How to get a Green Deal:
1 Get an assessment: Homeowners book an independent accredited assessor who visits their property to identify how much money could be saved on energy bills and provides a report on their findings with recommendations on Green Deal measures. These include: Insulation in the loft or wall cavity; heating; draught-proofing; double-glazing; and renewable energy technologies such as solar panels or wind turbines
2 Find a provider: The provider will offer quotes for all of the energy saving work that could be done on the property and discuss whether the Green Deal plan is right for the homeowner. Work will only be considered for properties where the future savings on energy bills exceed the repayments on the loan. If the homeowner chooses to go ahead with the work, the provider draws up a Green Deal plan which sets out the repayment structure
3 Start Installation: Once the plan is signed, the provider will arrange for an approved installer to do the works.
After the work is completed the homeowner can start enjoying the benefits of a warm and cosy home, with their repayments being added to their electricity bill (even if the savings are made on gas). If they move home, the loan stays with the property as the new owner is the one benefiting from the energy saving measures.
