Blockbuster stores staying open

WIGAN and Leigh’s Blockbuster stores have escaped the latest round of closures after administrators announced a further cull of the chain.

The DVD rental company went into administration last month and axed 160 stores as part of a phased programme of closures.

Joint administrator Deloitte has now announced the next stage of closures, which will affect 164 stores, but again, the Wigan Lane branch and Leigh’s Holden Road site are to remain open.

They will continue to trade as usual while administrators progress negotiations with bidders.

Staff in the stores affected by the closures will be facing redundancy and these sites will remain open for business as usual and customers will be notified in advance of closure so that they can return their outstanding rental items beforehand.

Lee Manning, joint administrator at Deloitte, said: “We have continued to review the performance of individual stores since our appointment a month ago and have concluded that further closures are necessary in order to restructure the company for sale.

“We would like to thank the company’s employees for their support and professionalism during this difficult time and we are also grateful for the continued support of customers.

“We are in discussions with a number of parties interested in purchasing all or parts of the business and will update on progress in due course.”

The company went into administration last month.
