A LOCAL building firm has become the first business in the borough to be awarded a Gold Award for its commitment to reducing its environmental footprint.

Hughes Brothers Building and Joinery Ltd was presented with the Environmental Business Pledge by Wigan Council.

Developed by Manchester City Council and delivered by the local authority in partnership with Groundwork, The Environmental Business Pledge is a free scheme that supports businesses to improve their environmental performance whilst saving money.

The EBP helps businesses to divert waste from landfill, reduce CO2 emissions and achieve cost savings.

Leigh-based Hughes Brothers is the first to achieve the award in the borough, but there a further dozen businesses working towards one.

The family business, whose headquarters are on Hope Carr Way, reduced its energy costs this year by 72 per cent following the installation of a Biomass Boiler and Solar PV.

Operations manager Mike Hughes said: “I felt going for this award was the way to further develop our business and the skills of the workforce.

“When I researched the different technologies in Scandinavia 2005, I learned that some were still in use from 30 years ago.

“We have always looked at cutting cost and the easiest way, was to recycle our waste and get our employees to buy into our ideas on reducing carbon emissions.

“We now have a green steering group and hold regular meetings to discuss new ideas on carbon reduction.”

Hughes Brothers set up a Green Steering Group to identify carbon reduction measures and to further reduce its Carbon Footprint intends to replace office light fittings with fewer and more energy efficient light bulbs and reduce its water usage by using a 150 Litre Eco Boiler System rather than a 300 Litre System.

Deputy leader of Wigan Council, Coun David Molyneux said: “Together with our partners, Groundwork and Manchester City Council, we introduced the Environmental Business Pledge to Wigan to help local companies realise the environmental and commercial benefits of becoming more eco-friendly.

“The scheme offers free information and advice on how firms can make their operation more sustainable, cut costs and raise their profile in the process.

“There’s never been a better time to adopt the Green agenda and we are delighted that such a high-profile company as Hughes Brothers is leading the way in our borough.

“We hope their excellent lead will inspire others to seize the initiative and join the Environmental Business Pledge.”
