IT was party time for Leigh centenarian Minnie as she marked her 100th birthday.

She had a party at Atherton Cricket Club, surrounded by family and friends, and if that was not enough she had a surprise visit from the Mayor, Coun Myra Whiteside, plus ward councillors Mark and Karen Aldred, at Hesketh Manor, where she resides.

Minnie, who has three children, four grandchildren and five great grandchildren, held down several jobs, including as a cleaner, spinner, weaver and she also worked in a bakery.

She enjoyed almost 50 years of marriage to husband James until he died 25 years ago, aged 77.

Her son Brian said: “She loved every minute of her birthday. She had a party at Hesketh Manor, in Atherton, with the Mayor and Couns Aldred.

“Children from Chowbent Primary School also came and sang happy birthday to her and presented her with flowers.

“It was a lovely day.

“She has done really well to get to 100 and she is still quite independent.”
