AN IRISH folk band is bringing its foot-stomping brand of traditional songs and tunes to Leigh for the second time by popular demand.
The Bogtrotters, which features members of the successful 1970s and 80s country and western band Poacher, will bring a mixture of original and traditional Irish songs, American roots music and lively jigs and reels to St Joseph’s Hall on Saturday, March 10.
Founded by Poacher lead singer Tim Flaherty, who plays guitar and sings, The Bogtrotters will perform as a six-piece in Leigh with bassist Jim Hand, guitarist Len Whitehead and banjo player Pete Longdon, the line-up completed by a flautist and a drummer.
The Bogtrotters, from Warrington, went down a storm in a sell-out concert at St Joseph’s Hall last year, and hope their second visit to Leigh will be just as successful.
Bassist Jim said: “We’re really looking forward to it, there was a full house and a very lively crowd there last year.
“We’ve done a couple of gigs around Leigh before and we’ve gone down very well. It’s pretty close to St Patrick’s Day too, so I would expect it to be quite a lively night.
“We mainly play songs, but we have a few instrumentals and we’ll be playing a few bits of folky, acoustic country music too.”
All proceeds from the concert will go towards the renovation and maintenance of the hall.
Promoter Des Cooney said: “When they played last time they were so good and I had lots of people coming up to me asking when they would be playing again.
“The concert is all part of the fundraising to keep the hall going. It’s a ballroom and theatre, and one of the few venues in the borough which can host major stage and theatre productions, so it’s a very valuable facility for Leigh.”
The Bogtrotters will play St Joseph’s Hall, on Chapel Street, on Saturday, March 10, starting at 8pm. Tickets are £10, including refreshments. To book, contact Des Cooney on 01942 674868, Pauline on 01942 604603, Jacqui on 01942 673517 or visit Radcliffe’s Bike Shop on Bradshawgate.
