A GLITTERING "red carpet" charity ball is being held in Atherton – to help children growing up in the shadow of nuclear meltdown.
The fund-raiser will even feature a paparazzi-style photographer to give guests the full VIP experience as they walk down a real red carpet, supplied by a local shop.

And caterers at the ball, which will raise money for the Friends of Chernobyl's Children, are even laying on a special canape-style Russian buffet.

Organiser Helene Lyth said: "It really means so much to me to raise as much as possible for these kids and we're hoping to get all the tickets sold.
"My brother and his wife host two of the 10-year-old Belarussian boys, Maksim and Zhenya, and they've become a real part of our family. This year will be their fourth visit, with next year being their last."

Tickets are still available for the event, which will feature a cabaret show performed by the New Garrett Theatre.
There will even be a chance for twinkle-toed guests to take part in some Latin and ballroom dancing, with prizes for the best dancers.

Helene added: "If anyone can help with the fund-raising in any way, with a raffle or anything, we would be really grateful.
"If any businesses are interested in sponsoring the ball in return for their adverts or business cards going on display, we would love to hear from them.
"We've also just lost our DJ so it would be great if anyone could step in."

The ball is being held on Saturday, March 7, at Formby Hall, Alder Street, Atherton starting at 7.30pm.
Tickets cost £20 which includes a buffet, live cabaret and a disco.
Black ties and ball gowns, or evening dresses, are preferred but there is no strict dress code. To buy tickets, call Helene on 07909 706880 or email helenelyth@hotmail.com

Every year the FOCC brings children to Britain for four weeks where they have healthcare, dental tests and eye tests.
It is estimated that drinking our cleaner water and breathing our cleaner air gives the children, on average, an extra two years of life.
