The skills of two Leigh wrestlers helped make an Oscar-winning movie the success it has become.
Actor Micky Rourke was the star of the The Wrestler but its director, Darren Aronofsky studied DVDs of Garage Professional Wreslting's monthly shows at the Monaco in Hindley which featured 'Dangerous' Damon Leigh and Joey Hayes.
Director Aronofsky was interested in seeing how GPW produced live events and requested the in-house made DVDs be sent out to America so they could be studied ahead of making the award-winning film.
GPW's Richard Noble said: "It's not only wonderful for Garage Pro Wrestling and the local areas that have such a rich history with wrestling. But it's equally as wonderful for UK wrestling on a whole. The movie is good too!"
Current British tag team champions, Leigh and Hayes, both from Leigh, grew up in a town with deep seeded wrestling roots and have gone onto tour the UK and Europe and become pros themselves.
Hayes said: "The pros who have stemmed from these areas read like a royalty of the wrestling world. I can say with pride that I learnt my trade in this area."
Former British Champion, Leigh added: "Growing up in this area has given us so many greats to learn from and people must never forget the legacy of great, great wrestlers this town has and continues to produce."
GPW will be at the Monaco Ballroom on Friday, February 20 and admission is £7 per person or £24 for a family of four, doors open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start. There will be a raffle on the night and the very same DVDs used by Hollywood will be on sale! Call 07703 312 146 to reserve tickets.
