LOCAL MP Andy Burnham's musical career is certainly hitting the right notes!
Fresh from his gig at the Albert Hall in London, the Culture Minister has now promised to take to the stage alongside students from a Wigan college in a benefit gig for Wigan and Leigh Hospice.
The Winstanley College musicians have just raised £200 for Wigan and Leigh Hospice with a "Rocket Man" gig at Lowton Civic Hall, a musical tribute to Sir Elton.
But they got more than they bargained for when they met the Culture minister for the cheque presentation.
He said: "I used to be able to play the guitar a little and told them that if, before they go to university, they arrange another concert in aid of the hospice, I would play with them.
"We hear so much about the bad things young people do but here is a great example of some of our talented youth helping those in our community who are on life's most difficult journey."
Band member Tim Colgate said the students were stunned by the generous offer but were looking forward to playing with the MP.
He said: "This is our second concert in aid of the Hospice, but it may well be our last because we're going to universities all over the UK.
"We were taken aback by Andy's generous offer and will have to get our thinking caps on right away to sort out a venue in Leigh, content for the show, and time for rehearsals."
Hospice communications officer Edwin Matthews said: "I believe the talented students got together just for this concert, it's a credit to them.
"It's also not every day a Minister of the Crown offers to perform on stage for us.
"We're very grateful to Mr Burnham and all the students for their very kind support."
Details of the concert will be announced once plans are finalised.
