THE best of years and the worst of years...
If you could sum up outgoing Mayor of Wigan Coun John O'Brien's term of office in one sentence, that would probably be it.
The 35th Mayor of Wigan borough began what should have been the pinnacle of any elected public servants' civic career against the backdrop of immense personal tragedy.
Last July he lost his wife and Mayoress Hazel after a brave four-year battle against breast cancer.
Such a devastating blow would have made many call time on their civic role, but duty and honour made Coun O'Brien solider on. And his year of office became a fitting tribute to his beloved wife.
Now reaching the end of his time in the Mayoral Parlour, the man who coined the title Mayor of the Borough of Wigan, to reflect his desire to unite the borough, said: "It's been a privilege and an honour to serve the people of Wigan as Mayor over the past 12 months.
"It has been a year that has not been without difficulties and setbacks but it has also been a time of great joy. I have had the pleasure of meeting people from all walks of life who are steadfastly devoted to the borough and fiercely proud of their heritage.
"I have been met with good humour, friendship and a warm welcome wherever I have visited in the borough this year. These are the typical character traits of people from our borough and ones we should preserve and cherish."
As a tribute to Hazel, Coun O'Brien's charity appeal has been to support breast cancer services in the borough.
The fund has so far raise £60,000 and that total is only set to increase further during the weeks ahead.
"I would like to thank everyone who has supported my appeal this year," said Coun O'Brien. "It's a cause that is obviously close to my heart and one that people have given their all for."
Coun O'Brien formally passed on the chain to Winstanley ward councillor Rona Winkworth this week.
He said:"I know the role will be in safe hands and I wish Coun Winkworth the same success that I have enjoyed," he says.
Coun O'Brien now returns to the full-time job of representing the people of his ward as a backbench councillor.
