THIS is the mangled wreckage of two cars after a horror crash which left a woman and child seriously injured.
And now calls are growing for further safety measures on the busy main road in Hindley Green after the road smash.

The driver and her four-year-old rear seat passenger both sustained head injuries in the collision on Leigh Road on Tuesday morning.
The woman had to be cut free from the crashed Ford Ka because she had also suffered a back injury.

Both are being treated in Wigan Infirmary and are in what police describe as 'serious but not life-threatening' conditions. The driver of the Volkswagen Touran Sport, with which the Ka was in collision, is understood to have escaped unscathed.

The road between Atherton Road and Smiths Lane, which leads on to Bickershaw Lane, was closed for almost four hours in both directions after the 8.45am crash with motorists advised to avoid the area.
Before the debris had even been cleared away further demands were made by local people to avert further accidents.

Hindley Green independent councillor, Bob Brierley, wants safety barriers erecting along the pavement at the blackspot.

He said: "Safety of our residents must be a priority and does somebody really have to be killed before something is done?
"Over the past four years the Metro highways department have spent a large amount of funding trying to make it safer including the latest which is a speed activated warning sign but still the crashes are happening and cars are mounting the pavement and knocking down residents' walls.

"There have now been approaching 40 accidents there and we want action."
Leigh Road resident Irene Ellison said: "I can't account for what caused this accident but speed has been a problem in the past. They put a slow down sign for traffic coming one way but not the other. I was walking on the pavement with a friend near the bad bend about 12 months ago and a car mounted the pavement at speed and crashed into a wall, missing us by about six inches.

"We have asked for a speed camera to be put there before to be told that it would be too expensive.
"But I am sure it wouldn't take long for them to get their money back."
