A LEIGH legend joined a cancer-stricken rugby star on a 246-mile trek across England.
Tommy Martyn was one of the 15 full-time walkers who supported Steve Prescott on his massive fund-raising challenge.
Players and fans of teams across the country got involved to raise £40,000 for Christies Hospital and the Rugby League Benevolent Fund.
They visited 23 clubs along the way, stopping off at Leigh Sports Village on Wednesday (October 1).
Former stand-off, Tommy said: "It was a brilliant experience and it was a great sense of achievement.
"Some of the injuries you see the lads get from the game are horrific and they need all the help they can get.
"I was one of the lucky ones, when I played professional rugby as I escaped pretty injury-free.
"Steve's charities are worthwhile and help a lot of people. Preccy is a brave lad, he's an inspiration."
Steve, who is currently battling a rare form of stomach cancer, and his team started on September 21, and finished on Saturday at the Grand Final at Old Trafford.
He said: "The support we have had has been tremendous. There were 15 of us doing the whole walk but we have been joined by many friends and supporters.
"It's been hard work this year, we increased the mileage by 50 from last year's walk.
"
When we hit some of the big hills over Yorkshire way we were in agony.
"We've kept on going, kept a good pace and we all pulled together."

A group of volunteers from Leigh East Amateur Rugby League club and their sponsorship partner Powerbeck joined up with Steve on the walk.
The Leigh East contingent took part in the Swinton to Wigan section with the Leigh East chairman, Keith Latham, and John Burke who was injured the day after his 21st birthday whilst playing for Workington against Leeds and has been in a wheelchair since.
The Swinton to Wigan leg was done in atrocious conditions with driving wind and rain.
Mr Latham said: "Steve is a true legend of rugby league and an inspiration to many.''
He also urged more people to donate to Christies hospital and the Rugby League Benevolent Fund.
