County honour for Lady Smith
THE WIFE of council leader Peter Smith has been made a Deputy Lieutenant by the County of Greater Manchester.
Lady Smith, of Old Hall Mill Lane in Atherton, was awarded the honour by the Lord-Lieutenant of Greater Manchester for her "endeavours over many years working to enhance the fabric of Greater Manchester.
Joy Smith, a former secondary school teacher who taught at Lowton High School, has worked tirelessly in the community over the years.
The 62-year-old has served on the managing and governing bodies of primary and secondary schools as a local authority representitive, took a place on the Board of Directors of Age Concern in the Wigan Borough and is a volunteer lay reader and re-writer of hospital material for the Wrightington Wigan and Leigh NHS Trust.
Lady Smith has been actively involved in the local community over the years and, along with a neighbour, helped to revive the defunct Old Hall Mill Lane residents group in 2005, of which she is currently chairperson."
