A local football club is demanding the council give a burger van the red card.
But Atherton Town FC, who play in the Manchester County FA, aren't putting the players on a more healthy diet.

They are furious at plans for a rival hot snacks trailer to be erected at home games because it will hammer their own snacks revenue.

Club officials insist that takings from their own half-time tea, chocolate and crisps service at the council's Howe Bridge Playing Fields are a vital part of their drive to be able to build new dressing rooms.

Councillors are being called in to referee the row when the Regulation Committee meets.

They are being asked to grant a street traders licence for the new sausage, bacon, burgers and paninis operation, being operated by Unsworth's Delicatessen of Bolton.

But Premier team manager and director Shaun Lynch said that they were about to modify their existing refreshments cabin, paid for out of their own pockets, so that it meets food hygiene regulations and will be able to sell hot food.

The council have already turned down a request to build them new
changing rooms and clubhouse, although they may agree to a match-funding project.

And the Football Foundation may be willing to provide a 65 per cent grant, as long as the club can make a substantial contribution to the costs for themselves.

Town have grown into a thriving football operation with three senior and 20 junior teams, and a women's outfit.

He said: "If it's approved, it would seriously impact the potential that the club has to raise funds and jeopardise the plans to build them."

But Unsworth's boss David Bradbury insists that their facility won't affect the existing provision on offer at Howe Bridge Sports Club.

He said: " The club has been there for a long time and the only people that would be using this facility would be patrons of the games being held there on match days.

"There are no residential properties near enough to the site who would or could be aggravated by its presence."

Metro licensing officer Tony Tuffin has not put any recommendation to councillors on the application.
