A Leigh Genesis signed football shirt is up for auction – with a reserve price of £1m.
An enterprising stalwart fan is hoping the shirt will attract a wealthy backer to rescue the club from its latest financial crisis.

Leigh Genesis is fighting for survival after its main sponsor withdrew investment with the Unibond Division One North club looking likely to fold at the end of the current season.

A signed shirt has now been placed on the online auction site eBay by the supporter who wants to see his club survive.

Bidders have until 6pm on February 28 to buy the shirt, with the current asking price set at £1 million.

On the site, the anonymous fan said: "You are bidding for or buying a piece of Leigh Genesis history.

"It's signed by many players from the last two seasons including the great Chris Holland, Chris Amadi, Brad Maylett, Matt Jansen and Garry Flitcroft to name a few.

"This piece of football history is up for sale because Leigh Genesis need funds to keep going.

"The club seriously needs the money and my life won't be worth living if I gave them away.

"If I've not received a bid close to the asking price after 28 days then I'll end the auction."

The shirt would almost certainly be the most expensive football shirt ever bought if the target price is achieved.

Geoff Hurst's World Cup winning shirt from 1966 is widely believed to be current record holder, surpassing Brazilian legend Pele's shirt, from the 1970 World Cup final, which was bought for £157,000.

Genesis spokeswomman Mary Croasdale said: "This is a very innovative idea. Even if it's not possible to reach the target, this will raise the profile of the club and hopefully attract financial backers.

"Everyone at the club is supporting this bid to raise funds."

Leigh MP Andy Burnham has pledged his support in the fight to save Genesis from the axe although the club looks unlikely to be able to play their homes games at Leigh Sports Village next season.
