Ian Millward is coming back to Leigh!
One of Super League's most successful coaches, Millward will rejoin the club in October in a sensational coup for the Co-operative Championship side.
He will complete the current year of his assistant coach appointment with Australian NRL side Canberra Raiders before heading back to be head coach at the club from which he first made his coaching impact on the British rugby league scene.
Delighted Leigh Centurions chairman Arthur Thomas announced that the former Leigh, St Helens and Wigan coach will take over the club's chief coaching role for the 2010 season after signing a three year contract.
Mr Thomas said he was delighted to have Millward return to the club that initially brought him to England from Australia back in 1999.
"Ian took Leigh from being a lowly- placed club to the top four before being released to take over at Saints in the 2000 season," said Thomas.
"And he then created history at Saints by steering them to two Grand Final victories, two Challenge Cups and a World Club Challenge in a six year term.
"He has a terrific record and we are delighted to have him back at the club."
Speaking from Australia, Millward was obviously looking forward to the opportunity to coach in England again.
"Leigh gave me a start back in 1999 and I will endeavour to repay the club and its supporters with success in the coming seasons" he said. "I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Leigh and in Super League and look forward to being back in England.
"It will also enable me to be closer to my three children, who still live in England and to allow my wife Marion to live nearer to her parents. I am also appreciative of Canberra Raiders' decision to release me from my current contract at the end of the 2009 season to allow me to take up the Leigh appointment."
Millward's return to the club where he began his impact on British rugby league will change the coaching set up at Leigh Sports Village.
Neil Kelly will stay on as football manager, in charge of contracts, player recruitment and development budget. He will continue to create the structure needed for a chance to make a successful Super League bid for 2011.
And the current head coach, Paul Rowley, will be Millward's assistant, with the chairman paying tribute to his work at the club.
"I would to thank Paul Rowley for his services during the interim period and he will continue at the club as a coach working alongside Ian," said Thomas.
"He became a top class Super League player through utter dedication, and his approach to coaching is the same. I am sure working alongside Ian will benefit his and the club's long term development."
