Paul Rowley as Leigh Centurions' new head coach made a winning start with a win at Batley.
It was Leigh's first win in four outings but Rowley was ready to admit it was a tough one.

"If I have many more games like this it won't be long before I am going grey," he quipped. "We really had to dig deep to hold on and win. And we didn't help ourselves with our discipline – but having said that we defended extremely well especially when we had the two periods when we were down to 12 men through sin-binnings. But we don't want to be doing that every week.

"The first 30 minutes was sensational with 100 per cent completion rate and no penalties, but we did know we would have to play up the slope and although that was a problem, the wind proved a bigger factor.
"Then as we tired we started giving penalties away, and played some dumb stuff which was frustrating to leave us hanging on! "
Rowley took over last Tuesday, when chairman Arthur Thomas met with him and Neil Kelly and offered Kelly the position of Team Manager with specific duties to help build the team and the structure for a successful Super League bid in 2011.

"I only found out about the changes and my new role late last Tuesday," said Rowley. "And that cut down my preparation time. But I think they are moves we are all happy with. We have both stepped up and knowing Neil and working with him, he will do a fantastic job as manager. He is so well organised.
It was a move that Neil was delighted to accept.

"I think it is an exciting opportunity," said Kelly. "With the best will in the world it is impossible to fill both roles satisfactorily and we need to start putting things in place for Super League now.
"I am very comfortable with Paul's appointment. I rate him very highly as a young up-and-coming coach and could see that he was ready to take on the head coach role. We get on well and I am looking forward to us being a successful coaching team."

But looking to the future, team performances now rest with Paul.
"I have identified areas where we lack a threat," he added. "Neil and I did this at the start of the season, but with our new roles, Neil can now actively set about pursuing those targets.
"Every one of our players gives100 per cent, but the balance of the side is not right and we need some experience in key areas to give us that cutting edge.
"With the best will in the world, clubs will not give us their best players now, but we can work to sign the best for next year. And that is what we want! Leigh is a big club and only the best will do."

Leigh are without a fixture this weekend as their scheduled clash with Halifax is postponed due to the Championship leaders being involved in the Challenge Cup.
Now Leigh's next game is on Thursday, May 14 when Widnes Vikings are the visitors to the Sports Village for a televised game that kicks off at 7.30pm.

The Centurions have announced that Tony Beavers has joined the club's Board of Directors.
During his playing career, Tony had spells with Bradford, Dewsbury and Keighley. Following the retirement from his playing career, he became a rugby league referee and Rugby League Council Member. He is also a former Chairman of the Alliance committee
