Leigh Centurions face a crucial trip to Barrow on Saturday when their hopes of a top two finish will be put on the line.
And they may have hard running second row Tommy Goulden back in the side just 16 days after he suffered horrendous facial injuries in the Northern Rail Cup semi-final defeat by Batley.

"Its Tommy's call," said Centurions coach, Ian Millward. "But Tommy has told me he wants to play and that his injuries will have healed enough for him to be confident that they will not be a problem to him playing. It is a remarkably courageous thing to do, but we will assess the situation before deciding with Tommy."

Goulden suffered a torn ear and ripped lip and both injuries needed plastic surgery.

The player was missing from last Sunday's win over Keighley, but is keen to get back despite an injury that was initially thought set to sideline him for four to five weeks.

Incredibly, Goulden is the latest injured Leigh player to show a remarkable rate of recovery and a determination to get back and do their job for the Centurions.

Robbie Paul was back in action on the playing field just three and a half weeks after having a testicle removed!

"They are very fit athletes whose bodies recover more quickly because of this," added Millward.

"Plus they are extremely courageous and committed to the Leigh cause. But we will not be letting them do anything that will put them in jeopardy."

Saturday's game at Barrow, which kicks off at 6.30pm, is crucial if the club is to hang on to second spot and keep hot on the tail of Featherstone Rovers.

Last year's champions Barrow are in fourth spot, some five points behind Leigh, but with two games in hand.

"It's a key game, and a very tough one," said Millward. "Last year the team got hammered by 70 points, and I would hope we can do better than that this time out. A win will enhance our top two claims and that is what we will be going for."

Leigh ended a three-match home losing streak with a workmanlike victory over Keighley that left Millward wanting more out of his troops.

"It was a better performance, but we still surrendered too much possession," he added. "But we also scored some nice tries. We need to learn how to kill sides off when we have them on the rack. I was disappointed we let Keighley grab two late tries, but we were back to a win and that has to be good. Our destiny is in our hands."

Leigh drew with Barrow in the opening game of the Cooperative Championship campaign, and then went on a marvellous nine game unbeaten run.

Now they are heading towards the business end of the season, and with a place in the Grand Final ticking one of the boxes for a Super League licence application, Leigh are desperate to fulfil that goal.
