Leigh Centurions have swooped to sign a young hooker from a local amateur club.

The Centurions have signed up Anthony Nicholson from Leigh Miners Rangers.

Nicholson has made a first team spot his own at Twist Lane this season, in addition to a solid tour of Australia with the GB Community Lions Under-18s which also saw two other local youngsters in Jonathan Pownall and Sam Hopkins feature.

Nicholson has been highly rated at Miners Rangers for a couple of seasons and was once on scholarship with Leigh back in 2006.

"He's been playing first team this season for Leigh Miners who are near the top of their competition," Centurions Head Coach Ian Millward confirmed.

"He went away on tour and I saw him play against Australia before a Canberra Raiders game. He and Jonathan Pownall were in the same team and it is very encouraging that both of them are signed to the club.

''I gave him a commitment that I would talk to him when I got to Leigh and he has committed himself to Leigh Centurions. He's another good signing for the future."
