Gateshead Thunder 30 Leigh Centurions 24
Leigh Centurions Coach Paul Rowley has been saying for some weeks that the relegation issue in the Cooperative Championship will only be decided on the last day of the season.
Not that he was in any mood to discuss this after Sunday's defeat at Gateshead, where he was furious with the performance of the referee Craig Halloran, despite his side grabbing a vital bonus point with a late fightback.
But that's how it will pan out after the Centurions were edged out in a thriller at Gateshead Thunder, to leave the Leigh side just two points off the relegation places and a point behind the third side in the mire, Batley Bulldogs.
Leigh's destiny is still very much in their own hands, but they must beat Halifax at the Leigh Sports Village next Monday in a crucial clash and then beat Whitehaven, again at home in the final game of the season.
If Leigh had managed to win at Gateshead then, one win out of the next two matches would have been enough for safety – and it still may be if Gateshead lose at Barrow next week – but at this time they still have it all to do.
Against Gateshead Leigh suffered a crippling 14-8 penalty count against them and Rowley was beside himself with anger at the performance of the referee after the game.
Hampered by the penalty count his side struggled to contain a Gateshead team that had hat trick hero Nick Youngquest at full back and Michael Knowles and Andrew Henderson leading an eager pack, particularly in the early stages when Leigh struggled to hold the ball and apply pressure after taking an early lead with an Ian Mort penalty goal.
It was Youngquest who opened the Gateshead scoring when snatching Henderson's grubber kick to ground for the try that Knowles goaled, before adding a later penalty for a high tackle.
Stuart Donlan was working his socks off for Leigh and pulling off some great tackles, but he was powerless to halt Gateshead's lively half back Luke Branighan as he burrowed over from dummy half, and Knowles again goaled.
Leigh were desperate for a score and they grabbed a lifeline two minutes from the break when James Taylor crashed in for a Mort goaled try to trail 14-8 at the break.
Within seconds of the restart, Leigh's fate looked nailed on as winger Stewart Sanderson and then Youngquest shot in for two quick tries and Knowles added the extras.
Even when Dave McConnell put in Mike Morrison, Youngquest's third try looked set to dump Leigh without he consolation of a bonus point.
But all credit to the Centurions who battled back. Donlan had a good looking try ruled out for crossing – and that proved crucial - before Nicky Stanton snatched an interception and raced the full length of the field for a Mort goaled try on 63 minutes.
Suddenly it was all Leigh and when Stanton grabbed his second try from Jamie Durbin's towering up-and under, the margin was six points with seven minutes remaining, and it was Leigh who looked to have the better stamina.
Donlan had to get back to deny Ben McAlpine, but in the end Leigh just ran out of time, and had to settle for a valuable bonus point.
